Overview

Some of the best ice climbing in the world can be found in Iceland and in the Alps — from beginner-friendly frozen waterfalls to steep, challenging multi-pitch routes. Based in Chamonix, Cogne, or visiting Iceland, this course introduces you to safe and efficient movement on ice while refining your technical and rope-handling skills. Each day is adapted to your level and the current ice conditions.

Ability Level

  • Suitable for beginners to experienced climbers.

  • No previous ice climbing experience required for single-pitch ice or intro courses.

  • For multi-pitch or advanced routes, previous rock or alpine climbing experience is recommended.

  • Coaching available for tool placement, footwork, protection placement, and efficient movement on steep ice.

 

Meeting Point

  • Usually in Chamonix, Cogne (Aosta Valley), or nearby alpine valleys depending on conditions.

  • Reykjavík, Iceland. If you choose to do the climbs in Iceland

  • Meeting time and location confirmed the evening before based on weather and ice quality.

 

Typical Itinerary

Single-Day Climbing

Learn and practice key techniques for ice climbing — movement, tool placement, and belay systems — on single-pitch icefalls. Perfect for beginners or those looking to improve their efficiency and confidence on ice.

Multi-Day Climbing

Combine learning with adventure on classic multi-pitch routes in the Alps. Multi-day programs allow you to build skills progressively and experience some of the best ice climbing venues in Europe.

 

Ideas for areas

  • Cogne (Aosta Valley) – world-class icefall climbing in a beautiful valley.

  • Trient Valley & Finhaut – ideal for learning and intermediate routes.

  • Argentière & Vallorcine (Chamonix Valley) – accessible ice and mixed routes.

  • Iceland

 

Ratio

  • Single-pitch / instruction days: up to 4 clients per guide (4:1).

  • Multi-pitch or advanced routes: maximum 2 clients per guide (2:1) for safety and efficiency.

  • Ratios may vary depending on conditions, route difficulty, and experience.

 

Price

  • From €650 per day for 1–2 people (multi-pitch / alpine routes).

  • From €650 per day for 3–4 people (single-pitch / instruction days).

  • Prices include guiding and group equipment.

  • Multi-day or custom itineraries priced individually depending on duration and logistics.

 

Included

  • Guiding and instruction by IFMGA-certified mountain guide.

  • Ropes, screws, and technical group equipment.

  • Photos from the trip (optional).

 

Not Included

  • Personal climbing equipment (boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice tools).

  • Transport to and from the meeting point.

  • Accommodation and meals.

  • Lift tickets (if applicable).

  • Personal insurance.

 

Good to Know

All ice climbing trips are adapted to your experience and the current conditions. Equipment rentals can be arranged locally if needed. Safety, efficiency, and enjoyment are always the main priorities.

  • November to March, depending on ice conditions and location.
